Watauga river fly fishing report.

February is here and we’re off to a good start. All sections of the South Holston river are now open to fishing. This is also the last month to use your annual Tennessee fishing license. Enough about that. Let’s talk fishing.

We’ve been fishing the Watauga river. Having some really good days on nymph rigs. Midges are working great under an indicator. We have been seeing more blue winged olives in the afternoons. The sizes have been ranging from 18-22. They haven’t been too picky on dry flies. Comparaduns, puff daddies, cripples, and emergers are all working well when the fish are up. Give us a call or send us email if you would like more info. As always, I hope to see you on the water.

The fishing has been great on the Watauga river. We’ve been seeing more blue winged olives. We’ve had some afternoon hatches that have offered opportunities for dry fishing. Nymph rigs are working great during non hatch periods. We are getting calls for March and April and still have some dates in February open. If you would like to book a date, please give us a call.

Winter weather has shown up here in northeast Tennessee. We’ve had cold weather early this week with temps forecast to climb into the 50s on Thursday. What does this mean for the fishing? Fortunately the water coming from the bottom of Watauga lake keeps the water temps in the mid 40s to 50 degrees year round. So right now the water temps are higher than the air temps. For those that don’t mind braving the cold, this can be an outstanding time to fish. We are looking forward to another year of some of the best trout fishing in the south east. If you have any questions, or if you would like to book a trip. Please feel free to give us a call or send an email.

We’ve had some unseasonably warm days this week. We’ve been taking advantage of the warm days and have been rewarded with great fishing. High water has been fishing like a champ. The flows are good and the fish are feeding. Nymph rigs have been the most productive with some blue winged olives hatching in the afternoons. Some days the hatches are better than others. The closer we get to February, the more consistent the hatches will become. There isn’t much fishing pressure right now. We are only seeing one or two boats a day. It’s a great time to get out on the water and virtually have it to yourself. Please feel free to give us a call if you would like more information, or if you would like to book a trip.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that you all are enjoying a new start. The watauga river has been fishing great. We’ve had good flows from the TVA and the fish have been feeding well. The weather has been crazy. A week ago it was 70 degrees. We started this week in the 30s, with temps climbing to 60 tomorrow. Nymph rigs are the most productive method right now. Streamers are pulling some fish as well. All in all it’s a great start to a new year. April and May are already starting to fill up. We have openings in January and February still available. If you have any questions, or if you would like more information about our services. Please feel free to drop us a line. We will be glad to help you plan your trip.

The TVA has been generating for a couple of weeks and the consistent flows have the fish feeding. Nymph rigs have been the most effective. Not too technical. 5x tippet, midges, blue winged olive nymphs, and good drifts are producing good numbers and quality fish. Dry flies have been hit or miss. You’ll get a hatch one day, and won’t hardly see any the next. We have a couple of December dates left. Give us a call if you would like to get on the water.

We’ve been fishing high water for the last few days. Good numbers of healthy fish are coming to the boat. The high water flows from the TVA have been consistent and have the fish feeding well. Nymph fishing is the way to go. We haven’t been seeing much dry fly activity. This is a great time of year to fish. Give us a call if you would like to get out on the water. We still have a few dates available.

The weather has been all over the place this week. It’s in the mid 60s one day and in the teens the next. The good news is, the Watauga river is fed from the bottom of the dam. Meaning the water temps are relatively close all year. The cold weather doesn’t bother the trout. We’ve been having some really good days. Good numbers of fish with some bigger fish as well. November and December are always good months to fish. The weather can be a little hard to predict, but the fishing is definitely worth it. We still have a few November dates open and December has spots available as well. Give us a call if you’d like to get out on the water.

Hello November! Frosty mornings and sunny afternoons are here. The fishing is great! Light nymph rigs and dry/dropper rigs are working well. We are starting to see some more blue winged olives in the afternoons. A bwo emerger pattern has been working great while the fish are rising. I know I sound like a broken record, but it’s the truth..Long leaders, light tippet, tiny midges, and a long drag free drift are key. November is starting to fill, but we still have some dates available. Give us a call if you would like to get out on the water.

Fall has finally arrived in northeast Tennessee. We’ve been having cool mornings getting up to the upper 70s in the afternoon. Midges are hatching like crazy. So many that the bite has been a little tricky. Good, but tricky. By tricky I mean extremely subtle takes. Long leaders, light tippet, and tiny midges along with long, drag free drifts are the name of the game. Please feel free to give us a call if you’re interested in a fishing trip. October is full, but we have some November and December dates available. I hope to see you on the water

The weather is starting to feel like fall. We got some much needed rain and the temperatures are in the 70’s. If you’ve read our previous fishing reports, you know that small flies, light tippet, and long drag free drifts are key. We’re fishing dry/dropper rigs with small midges and light nymph rigs with small blue winged olive nymphs and midges. Both rigs are working well. October is nearly full. We have some November dates still available. Give us a call if you would like to book a trip.

It’s hard to believe that today is the last day of September! September was an outstanding month on the Watauga river. Small midges on light tippet, with long drag free drifts got it done for us. Light nymph rigs and dry dropper rigs have been the game all month. I can’t wait to see what October holds. Bigger fish will be moving up and feeding in preparation of the spawn. We still have some October dates available. Please feel free to give us a call or send a message if you’re interested in booking a trip or if you’d like more information on our guide service.

Fall is here! The leaves are turning and some are falling. It’s my favorite time of year in east TN. Tiny flies, light tippet, and long drag free drifts are the game. We’re still looking for blue winged olives to get fired up, it won’t be long. Good numbers and some good quality fish are coming to the net on dry droppers and light nymph rigs. We still have some October dates available. Please give us a call or send an email if you would like to book a trip, or if more information about our guide service.

We are starting to see signs of fall. Leaves are starting to change color. It won’t be long before temperatures start drop. Right now the fishing is great. Light nymph rigs and dry dropper rigs are producing well. Small midges and blue winged olive nymphs on light tippet are our go to setups. Long drag free drifts are the key to being successful. Another great week in the books. Small flies and light tippet are still the name of the game. Light nymph rigs and dry dropper rigs have been effective. We’re seeing a few blue winged olives here and there. But, the nymph fishing is where it’s at. Small midges and bwo nymphs are producing consistently. If you would like more information about our guide service, or would like to book a trip. Please feel free to give us a call or send us an email.

Temperatures have started to cool down, but the fishing is still hot! Light tippet and small midges are the way to go. Light nymph rigs are bringing lots of fish to the boat. We’re still doing good with beetle patterns under the trees as well. August has been amazing and with fall right around the corner, the fishing will just get better. We still have some September dates available. Give us a call if you’d like to get out on the water.

Another great week in the books. Starting early in the mornings has really paid off. We fished both rivers last week. Low water Watauga has been fantastic. So has high water on the South Holston. We had a few sulphurs on the South Holston last week. Not a huge hatch, but enough to have consistent dry fly fishing. So far August has been a blast. I can’t wait to what September holds. Give us a call if you’d like to get out on the water.

August is here and the fishing is great!

Light nymph rigs and dry dropper rigs have been the name of the game. Small flies and light tippet. One of our guests landed a 20” rainbow on 6x tippet yesterday. It’s not the easiest game in town, but it can be rewarding. Small midges and micromay’s are working well. We are still getting fish on beetle patterns also. Mike’s magic beetle, and Ben’s beetle are both good patterns.

We spent a couple of days last week on the South Holston and it did not disappoint. The high water fishing was very consistent. With lots of fish coming to the boat.
